Nuno (wool felted silk) Scarves |
|
|
White silk chiffon or habatai scarves form the base for these scarves that use a felting process called “nuno.” The scarf is dyed the desired base color. Bits of colorful wool roving are laid in place across the surface of bubble wrap in a pattern to develop the desired scarf texture. Next the scarf and wool are wetted, with soap added, and then the layers are rolled into a bundle and tied. The felting process starts by rolling the bundle back and forth about 900 times. Periodically the bundle is unrolled, scarf inspected, and re-rolled. Once the wool fibers have become interlaced between the silk’s woven yarns, the felting process has begun. Next the scarf is fulled by plunging it into hot soapy water, and then dropped over and over again. This process adds more texture to the scarf as the wool fibers become more embedded into the scarf’s woven structure. Once fulling is completed, the scarf is rinsed thoroughly, and then air dried. Each scarf is unique, and often the end result is a surprise. This felting process takes about 6 hours. |
