An experiment with black fabric,
ginkgo leaves used as a mask, and a bleach solution created the base for
the discharge dyed piece. Various yellow and gold leaves have been
appliquéd over the base leaves to create a shadow effect, introduced in the
book, Casting Shadows. Machine quilting suggests water ripples

This is the third
quilt in a series using the design unit of strips and curves. It was fun and
challenging to create a value scale using white-with-black to black-with-white
prints for the wedge “strata.” Four different red and black batik prints were
used for the background “L’s.” The strata has been accentuated with metallic
quilting. Additional circles have been appliquéd
to the quilt to add a three-dimensional effect.

The inspiration for
this quilt began with a group of fabrics from the “Color Rhythms” collection.
The design unit of a wedge combined with an “L” form a square, introduced in a
contemporary “quilt block” from the book, Strips and Curves. A myriad of
pinks to reds and yellow-greens to olive greens create a vibrant complementary
color harmony. The circular shapes have been accented with circular quilt
stitching, while the background’s horizontal stitching lines add a calming
visual effect.

An improvisational
technique was used to create this quilt. Four squares of fabrics were stacked.
The layers were cut through, then pieces were interchanged with matching
components of the other colors, and sewn to create 4 new squares. The squares
were stacked again, layers were cut through, then pieces were again
interchanged and sewn to create 4 new squares. The final 4 squares were sewn
together to create the final design. Channel quilt stitching accents some of
the shapes.
